Chennai , India — May 16-17, 2025 — The Institution of Green Engineers broke OWR European Union World Record for a longest conference on energy for sustainability towards SDG7 Affordable and Clean Energy for 25-hour and 25-minute.
The New World Record hosted 2025 minutes of nonstop discussions around the EARTHDAY 2025 theme, ‘Our Power & Our Planet,’ featuring 40 sessions across 6 modules that explored the challenges and opportunities of energy-related Sustainable Development Goals.

IGEN ENERGATHON 2025 : Certified by Asia Book of Records (ABR), World Record Certification Agency (WRCA), and Official World Record (OWR), European Union 4th edition of global energy action marathon — attempted a 2025-minute world record aligned with the 55th Earth Day, themed “Our Power & Our Planet.” IGEN ENERGATHON 2025 will focus on: Shaping the Sustainable Energy Action Plan, Advancing the Energy Triangle Framework, Contributing to the progress of all 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) ,Driving impactful discussions on State, National, and UN energy policies, Strengthening SDG4ENERGY initiatives through global collaboration and knowledge exchange. Bringing together 25 global partners, 25 academic institutions, 25 industry and academic leaders, 25,000+ participants, and 25 strategic themes, the event will foster continuous, solution-oriented dialogue to address global energy challenges and advance the SDGs.

Through 6 modules and 40 sessions, the “Our Power & Our Planet” initiative brought together over 13,000 participants to explore solutions supporting energy-linked SDGs — especially SDG 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, and 13. Contributions came from 20 special guests, 82 pre-conference speakers, 330 marathon speakers, 6 IGEN Green Sustainability Partners, 10 global partners, and 80 organizers. The outcome of this collaborative dialogue is a set of 10 key recommendations, submitted to UN ENERGY 2025, EarthDay, the UN SDG team, the Government of India, and the Government of Tamil Nadu, aimed at accelerating sustainable energy transitions and advancing global climate goals.

Dr. L. Ramesh, President of IGEN, introduced the six themes and led a conversation on the role of academic institutions in achieving ENERGY4SDG at the opening of the IGEN ENERGATHON on May 18, 2024, at 06 AM.
Mr. S. Srinivasan, Executive Vice President & Head – Engineering, Power Transmission & Distribution & Renewables ICs, Larsen & Toubro inaugurated IGEN ENERGATHON 2025 on 16th May 2025 at 8:00 AM and session continues for 2025Minutes. As part of the inaugural session of IGEN ENERGATHON 2025, Mr. S. Srinivasan delivered a compelling thematic talk focused on the evolving landscape of Power Transmission & Distribution (T&D) and the seamless integration of Renewable Energy Sources within India’s energy infrastructure.
Mr. Alagappan Ramanthan, Development Goals Specialist, United Nations Development Programme, SDG Coordination Center – Tamil Nadu, released the #igenEnergathon2025 program book at 10AM. He emphasized the urgent need to decarbonize the transport sector, which contributes significantly to global greenhouse gas emissions, aligning closely with SDG 13 (Climate Action) and SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy).

Modules 1 and 2 of IGEN ENERGATHON 2025 focused on advancing clean energy through together policymakers, academia, industry experts, and youth through two impactful modules focused on advancing the global energy transition. The sessions included the launch of ENERGATHON, SDG7 pledges, India’s Energy Vision 2047 discussions, international policy pathways, sustainable engineering solutions, the Green Nexus Conclave, collective energy pledges by 25 colleges, podcasts on energy efficiency, student energy pitches, cultural SDG activities, and a summit of academic leaders. Together, these efforts strengthened SDG7 action and fostered practical solutions and partnerships in line with the vision of the UN Energy Action.

Module 3, Night of Innovation, showcased startups, emerging technologies, and climate dialogue. Highlights included a startup showcase on SDG solutions, a live demonstration from an EV research lab, a youth-led climate debate on the 1.5°C challenge, discussions on green artificial intelligence for sustainable data, future tech innovations, and an industrial panel on leveraging IoT and smart energy solutions. Module 4, Global Connect, focused on international partnerships and synergies for achieving global energy goals. Sessions featured global synergy dialogues on unlocking SDG 17 for energy targets, a leaders’ panel on building smart grid networks, strategic discussions supporting the UN Energy Action Plan, insights into energy’s role in advancing space research, and a review of Tamil Nadu’s state energy policy with practical recommendations.
As part of the IGEN ENERGATHON 2025, a special Vice Chancellors Panel Meet was held on 16th May 2025, from 6:30 PM to 8:00 PM, focusing on “The Role of Academic Institutions to Achieve Targets of SDG7”. The session was moderated by Dr. Akila Muthuramalingam, Honorary Secretary of IGEN, and coordinated by Dr. E. Kavitha(Head IGEN YGIN ARME). Distinguished Vice Chancellors who shared their insights and strategies included: Dr. Jayanthi, Vice Chancellor, Sharda University NCR. Dr. Pankaj Kumar Mishra, Vice Chancellor, Future University. Dr. Manpreeth Singh Manna, Vice Chancellor, Chandigarh University. Dr. B Priestly Shan, Vice Chancellor, Alliance University. Dr. Monika Sethi Sharma, Vice Chancellor, KK Modi University. The discussion emphasized how academic institutions can play a leading role in advancing affordable and clean energy solutions in line with SDG7, through research, innovation, collaboration, and capacity building.

Module 5 focused on empowering communities through local actions and education for sustainability. Sessions included initiatives like Harvest Plastic for ecosystem sustainability and circular economy, student action pitch presentations on UN energy policy, a Green Conclave on building sustainable academic institutions, and the EARTHDAY Conclave highlighting responsibility towards the planet. Other sessions explored innovation for healing the Earth, sustainable healthcare supply chains, and international project opportunities, concluding with the SDG4ENERGY deliberation featuring 17 speakers from 17 states. Module 6 wrapped up the ENERGATHON with powerful collaborations and forward-looking discussions. Highlights included a Global Energy Pitch Competition, an academia–industry panel on advancing SDGs 7, 11, 12 & 13, creative sessions on energy-indexed SDG reporting, challenges in R&D indexing, and an open session on the global shift to 75% renewable energy by 2030. The event concluded with the IGEN ENERGATHON 2025 Awards and a valedictory session celebrating partnerships and collective impact.

At the closing of IGEN ENERGATHON 2025, APJMJ Sheik Dawood, Co-founder, APJ Abdul Kalam International Foundation, urged participants to carry forward Dr. Kalam’s vision by turning innovative ideas into real impact. He praised the event’s solutions for combining technology with social responsibility and community empowerment. He emphasized that true energy progress depends on people’s will, collaboration, and energy justice. The session ended with a call to action: transform dreams into actions that power communities and protect the planet.
