Youth for Change: Start Your #SDG12 Project & Become a UNEP-Certified HERO 🌍
“Zero Food Waste, Become a Planet Hero.” 🌍🌱 ZERO is GOOD
Food is precious, yet millions of tonnes are lost or wasted every day while many people still face hunger. The future of our planet depends on the actions we take today.
Certified under the UNEP International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste, The Institution of Green Engineers (IGEN), in association with URI CC – IGEN VIBBGGYOR Green Circle, is pleased to launch the project “IGEN ZERO2HERO” under the IGEN SDGProjects initiative, aligned with #SDG12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), with the objective of reducing food loss and waste towards zero by encouraging individuals, youth, and communities to adopt responsible consumption practices and take collective action for a more sustainable future. 🌍🌱
Reducing food loss and waste is essential as global hunger continues to rise. About 13.2% of food is lost between harvest and retail, while nearly 19% of total global food production is wasted at retail, food service, and household levels, contributing to food insecurity and environmental impacts. The International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste emphasizes the need for increased climate financing and coordinated global action to reduce food loss and waste, strengthen food security, and accelerate progress toward the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda, particularly SDG 12.3.
#IGENZERO2HERO: The project encourages youth to take at least one action recommended by #TheIGEN to reduce food waste towards zero and inspire five peers to do the same. Upon completing this action chain, participants will be recognized as Heroes of Food Waste Management, with the initiative aiming to empower 500 youth heroes and promote responsible consumption under SDG 12. 🌱🌍
